At the age of 67, most women are content to ease themselves into retirement, but not Claire McCombe. She is currently cycling along the rugged Norwegian coastline, heading for the Arctic Circle. And she is doing it alone.
Clair is completing the Atlantic Coast cycle route (also known as Eurovelo 1), which is more than 6,800 miles long and connects six European countries from Portugal’s northwestern border to the northernmost tip of Europe, 300 miles above the Arctic Circle.

As you read this, she is cycling alone in Norway along what is considered the most brutal part of the journey, wild camping along the 1,851-mile journey, with just a few vital bits of sustenance in her bag. Her only companion her trusty Oxford Bike Works Margaret (named after a godmother whose inheritance helped purchase the bicycle).
Throughout her solo adventure, Claire has been keeping a meticulous log and taking countless stunning photographs, which she’ll be sharing in a book that will chronicle her incredible journey, which is raising money for MND (motor neurone disease) research. The Hickathrift Press is proud to be publishing this book, hopefully later this year. Watch this space for more information.

Claire has promised to keep us updated with reports from her gruelling Norwegian leg, but in the meantime, you can read the full story behind her mission, written by legendary news journalist Sarah Ward. Click HERE.
