Hickathrift Press editor Dave Phillips will, for many folks, be forever associated with fishing and angling journalism. That’s hardly surprising, since his first job after leaving school was as a reporter on Angling Times – at that time the best-selling angling newspaper in the world. Later, at the tender age of 27, he became editor of the legendary Coarse Fisherman magazine, noted for its environmental campaigning, as well as hosting the very best angling writers in the business.
Dave is also the author of How To Catch Pike, the best-selling book on the subject, published by Hickathrift and available in softback, hardback and Kindle e-book formats, direct from Amazon.
Dave’s journalistic career has taken him to all sorts of places – including more than two decades spent editing the leading Land Rover and 4×4 magazines – but over the last two years he has been writing an acclaimed series of articles for the superb Catch Cult fishing magazine. In them, he reminisced about the Golden Age of Angling – from the 1960s through to the millenium – when fishing, like so much in modern life, was an altogether more gentle pursuit. That series was so popular, that Dave has decided to expand upon the theme and devote a whole book to the subject.
That book is now in the planning and research stage, and Dave would love to hear from fellow anglers with tales to tell of fond memories and great catches from the second half of the 20th century. It doesn’t matter whether your memories of great fishing were in the local cut or an exclusive Scottish salmon river, they are all important. Tales from all branches of the sport, including foreign adventures, are very welcome.
