Dave Phillips is putting the finishing touches to his semi-autobiographical The Golden Years of Angling, which looks at the second half of the 20th Century from the point of view of an angler who grew up at a time when the sport was changing out of all recognition.
The lifelong angler believes he’s the best person to write this book, because he has been involved in angling journalism since 1972 and knows most of the best fishermen in the country.
The book also charts his early years in the Fens of West Norfolk, as well as his career in journalism, which includes editing the influential Coarse Fisherman magazine, as well as spells on Fleet Street and even the Sunday Sport.
The book is 75,000 words long, with some very atmospheric photos – many of which have never been published before – and it includes many guest contributions. These include a charming chapter on the fruit-growing industry that shaped Tilney St Lawrence, the village where he was born and bred, written by Britt Ingrid Lervik, a Norwegian woman who spent three summers there as a student in the Sixties, helping with the strawberry picking. She called it Strawberry Fields Forever!
The book will be published later this month in hardback, paperback and Kindle e-book formats, but Dave has one problem: he can’t decide what to put on the front cover. He has already designed several and has narrowed it down to three.
