Best-selling thriller writer Graham Hurley’s first book with the Hickathrift Press is now on sale on Amazon.
The book is Yonder – the first of a planned series of novels featuring the extraordinary adventures of an 18th-century teenage girl.
The Plot
The year is 1789. The western world is reaching for freedom. American settlers have declared independence. The Parisian mob storm the Bastille. And in England’s sleepy Devon, a fifteen-year-old orphan called Killick nets peaceably for salmon in the River Exe. Unschooled, she is determined to improve her mind. But her body has other ideas.
Circumstances force Killick to join a crew of five men headed for the rich cod banks off Newfoundland. From here, the tiny sloop will head to Portugal to sell the salted catch before returning home with wine and spices. A woman in a man’s world? This is deeply unusual, as is what lies in wait.
Days and nights of constant physical challenge. Relationships she will treasure for life. Involvement in a savage murder. And the glad knowledge that getting away has changed her forever.
Yonder. Where freedom can really take you.

About the author

Graham Hurley is an ex-TV documentary maker. Since1992, he has been a full-time novelist. His Faraday and Winter series of crime novels were adapted for French television, and he was twice shortlisted for the Theakston’s Crime Award. The lead title in his Spoils of War series, Finisterre, was shortlisted for the Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize. Graham lives with his wife, Lin, in East Devon.
What comes next?
His next novel with Hickathrift, Nakba, will be released later this month – and it deals with a contemporary crisis.
Graham Hurley spent three summers as a student working on a kibbutz in northern Israel. Nearly fifty years later, he and his wife Lin went back to Greater Israel and the West Bank. What they found, and the conversations they shared, sparked this book.
The key to Nakba? Here’s a line from Sapir Daham, an Israeli activist and one of the three lead characters in the chill anger of this novel. ‘Never waste your own death,’ she says. ‘Because it’s the only one you’ve got.’
Nakba. What happens when catastrophe breeds despair.
