IT’S been a hectic time here at Hickathrift HQ these past few weeks, with three brilliant new books in the pipeline. The first, already on sale at Amazon, is By The People, For The People, which tells the inspiring story of a community’s fight to build and run its own hospice.
The people of Corby wanted their own day care hospice for folks with life-limiting illnesses, but the NHS wouldn’t build one. However, Jean Clark and her friends refused to take no for an answer and set about raising the cash to build – and run – their own, independent hospice.
The experts said it couldn’t be done, but they had reckoned without the iron-willed determination and community spirit of the folks of this former steel town.
It took a lot of effort and years of non-stop fundraising, and they suffered plenty of knocks along the way, but in July 2001 the Lakelands Day Care Hospice opened its doors for the first time.
A quarter of a century on, the town is celebrating Lakeland’s 25th anniversary. As part of those celebrations, respected local journalist Sarah Ward – herself a Corby woman – has penned the heart-warming story of people who did it.

The other two books nearing completion are The Season That Really Was by Andrew Stephen (a celebration of his beloved Cambridge United’s 2025-26 promotion season) and Hickathrift’s first full-length novel – a 430-page debut thriller from Mark Coady. Both titles should be on sale within the next week or so. We’ll be telling you much more about them later.
