Fenland pike fishing legend Denis Moules has heaped praise on The Golden Years of Angling by Dave Phillips – the latest release from the Hickathrift Press.

Like Dave, Denis was born in the Marshland area of the Fens, deep in Hickathrift country – the marshy area where the legendary giant Thomas Hickathrift once strode. A retired police officer, he now lives in Cambridge and for decades has been a driving force for pike fishing in the area, as well as an inspiration for anglers seeking them.
The Golden Years of Angling is a semi-autobiographical book, in which author Dave tells the story of growing up as a young angler in the fertile rivers and drains of Fenland.
Writing on Facebook, Denis said: “I am currently reading this excellent book. As someone who was a few years older than Dave and bought up in Walton Highway, a mere half dozen miles from Dave’s village of Tilney Fen End / St Lawrence, I can relate with all that’s written about growing up in this lovely area in the 1960s and early ’70s. Like Dave, my job took me away from the area, but this rendering has brought back many fond memories.”
Dave said: “I’m thrilled. Praise from Denis is praise indeed. Nobody knows more about fishing the Fens and his book, The Fenland Thirties, is the Bible for anglers seeking big predators in the area.”
